Some in the SEO (Search Engine Optimization) industry advertise themselves as using only legitimate and approved methods. It means they are ethical. SEOs suggest that people who use unethical practices are the bad guys in the SEO industry. It turns out that the idea of black and white hats is not as straightforward as it has been presented.

White Hat SEO has Historically Been About Risk and Reward

It is clear that the choice to not use paid links was not made on moral grounds. The strategy’s danger was the foundation of it.

I just want to illustrate the point that paid links used to be a white hat tactic up until Google started penalizing it. This is not said to criticize anyone. I am just pointing out the historical fact.

Difference Between White Hat and Black Hat SEO

There has always been a tension between White Hat SEO and Google’s rules. White hat SEO looked for loopholes to exploit and then backed off when Google closed them. That’s a historical fact.
Exploiting loopholes and balancing the risk and reward of a tactic is something that white hat and black  hat SEO share in common. In actual practice, there has always been some crossover between the two, particularly in employing strategies that scaled.
