How to Increase Your Content’s Shareability

Part One: The Mindset Shift

What do you do before you write an article? How do you determine what to write? If you only have a limited amount of time to grow your blog’s traffic, you should focus on the most effective methods. What are some of the questions that we had difficulty answering?

Instead of just answering the questions, I’m going to explain the reasoning behind the answers. The answers will come in part two.

Resist the urge to update your blog.

During a 3-week lull before we started a new content strategy that would eventually increase our traffic by 220%, our traffic was low. Over the course of that period, we did not publish a single new article.

It was not easy to do. Like most bloggers, we have the urge to update. We couldn’t sit still.

So why did we pause? It was important for us to sit down and think through our content strategy. We needed to research and gather data. Instead of blindly following what is considered to be the best way to do things, we needed to take into account our individual circumstances and make decisions based on that information.

Article success is not always common sense.

If you try to be the judge of your own content, you’ll quickly realize that you don’t know as much as you thought you did about why a particular piece of content was successful.

The good news? There are many awesome tools available to help you figure it out. We realized that we needed to focus on quality over quantity. Content should always be focused on a particular goal.

We paid more attention to analytics in particular. We already had Google Analytics when we decided a couple of months ago to also start using Heap Analytics to get a better understanding of how different factors relate to each other.

Set measurable micro goals.

We wanted to make learning design accessible to as many people as possible, regardless of their location, circumstances, or background. Our goal was to create a world where everyone has the opportunity to learn design. Did we have a goal for every post we published? Not straight away.

Now we do. Posts don’t all have to achieve the same goal. We brainstormed a list of goals we wanted to achieve, and every post we have published since then has needed to achieve at least one goal from the list.

Content marketing is a marathon. Each blog post we publish is a step forward.

Part Two: What We’ve Since Learned

That was how our thought process changed. We moved from a carefree attitude of ” just do it” to a more thoughtful approach with our blog. We added goals and broke them down so that every post we publish is optimized.

Then we tested. Relentlessly. What we have learned can be broken down into tips that you can use for your own blog.

Write more in-depth posts.

We thought that having shorter posts would be better for our readers, like many other blogs do. You’ve heard it before: “People don’t read online.” Everyone’s busy, right? We got straight to the point and gave our reader short, summarized tips.

But in our research, we found two interesting studies. A study conducted by John Doherty showed that there is a correlation between the size of an article and the number of links it receives. A second study, by Buzzsumo, found that long-form content receives more social shares than shorter posts.

We tried it, and it paid off. The first post we published that was longer than usual broke our previous record in traffic and shares. Since we published our last piece, all of our content has been at least 2000 words long.

Become a storyteller.

While stories may not always be the best way to get across informational content, they can speak to the emotions and help build anticipation. They can also remind the reader why the content is important and make it more memorable than a simple list of tips.

Optimize your title, no matter what your gut says.

The importance of a great headline does not seem to fade when it comes to blog posts.

Most people have a preference for short titles. You might think that longer titles look spammy, or that they don’t look good on your blog’s current design. Changing the design would mess up the design of hundreds of blog posts in which you used short titles.

However, from our experience, longer titles are just as effective, if not more so, than shorter. If you want to see an example of this, compare the lengths of the titles of our blog posts published before January 7, 2015 to the ones published after January 28, 2015.

Your goal should not be to write lengthy headlines. The main point is not to be afraid of testing headlines that are longer than what you are used to, or more generally, not to be afraid to test headlines that you think may not be successful. If titles are really that important, you would do almost anything to have a good one.

Reverse engineer your competitors.

Think of your blog as a product, rather than just trying to push out more articles to get more traffic. This is a common mistake. Any successful business owner will tell you that understanding the competitive space is crucial. If you’re not familiar with the existing content in your industry, how can you become an expert?

Curate unique content.

If you want your post to be world-class, it needs to be 100% original.

You need to create a 100% original work, but you can also curate it from existing materials. This is something we learned by observing our competitors.

Take a look at Design School’s posts. We often showcase the work of various designers rather than creating our own original designs. Of course, we always give credit where it’s due.

Curation works for two reasons. Your readers love it when you show them something they are interested in because it allows them to find new and interesting things. After you publish a post featuring someone, you can let them know and many of them will share your post to their followers. Win-win.

Test Everything

In 60 days, we increased our blog by 226%.

So what’s the most important lesson here? Stop doing, and start testing. To achieve your major goals, you should do research, find the appropriate tools, and set small goals along the way. If you keep testing with the goal in mind, you’ll see improvements, just like we did.
