White Hat SEO Practices to Implement Today

Some in the SEO (Search Engine Optimization) industry advertise themselves as using only legitimate and approved methods. It means they are ethical. SEOs suggest that people who use unethical practices are the bad guys in the SEO industry. It turns out that the idea of black and white hats is not as straightforward as it has been presented.

Below are seven beliefs commonly associated with black hat SEO, as well as some unexpected ways in which it shares similarities with white hat SEO.

History of White Hat SEO

Some may be surprised to read what follows. I’ve been working in this sector for almost two decades and I can talk to you about how SEO was done in the past decade or so because I am a seasoned veteran.

The following isn’t something I read about. I can personally attest to the events of the past because I experienced them first-hand.

If you examine the past of white hat SEO, you will recognize that a significant component of it concentrated on taking advantage of imperfections in Google’s webmaster regulations.

Three examples of expedient white hat tactics:

  1. Scaled Reciprocal links
  2. Scaled Guest Posting
  3. Paid Links

Paid Links Were White Hat

Some may be surprised to see paid links listed as a white hat tactic.  Paid links were a white hat tactic until Google began penalizing it.
White hat SEOs defended the practice of paid links as advertising. The argument was that Google had no right to shut down a legitimate advertising business, especially since Google itself sold “paid links.”
Google went along with it for a time. Then Google cracked down. That’s when the white hat SEO industry backed away from paid links.
Rand Fishkin

posted a statement in 2009 that clarified his position on paid links:

I want to make it clear to the public that neither I nor SEOmoz support the notion of purchasing and selling links as part of an SEO strategy.

  1. We would advise against our current clients investing in paid links, link advertisements, or buying or selling links.

  2. We take this approach because the potential risks outweigh the possible benefits, and not for any ethical, moral, or legal reasons.

  3. We have changed our position because we believe that paying for links no longer delivers significant results over time in SEO campaigns. Other strategies that require the same effort and money are often more rewarding and less risky.

White Hat SEO has Historically Been About Risk and Reward

It is clear that the choice to not use paid links was not made on moral grounds. The strategy’s danger was the foundation of it.

We make this decision because the potential benefits do not outweigh the potential risks, and not due to any ethical, moral, or legal issues.

Paid links used to be a white hat tactic until they stopped working and started affecting clients negatively.
I post the above quote and screenshot of a comment to show that paid links used to be a white hat tactic. It’s not meant to criticize anyone.
I just want to illustrate the point that paid links used to be a white hat tactic up until Google started penalizing it. This is not said to criticize anyone. I am just pointing out the historical fact.

Difference Between White Hat and Black Hat SEO

There has always been a tension between White Hat SEO and Google’s rules. White hat SEO looked for loopholes to exploit and then backed off when Google closed them. That’s a historical fact.
Exploiting loopholes and balancing the risk and reward of a tactic is something that white hat and black  hat SEO share in common. In actual practice, there has always been some crossover between the two, particularly in employing strategies that scaled.

White Hat SEO practices to implement today

1. Put user experience first.

Be aware that Google expects that your users should be the priority. That’s one of the biggest missteps in SEO. Rather than crafting material meant to be read by machines, successful SEO produces and interacts with genuine people.

Google is pushing companies to devote more of their energy towards giving customers an outstanding experience.

Google’s algorithms are made to give a benefit to websites that offer a seamless and uncomplicated user experience.

The reason why search engine optimization and user experience are so strongly connected.

Without SEO, no traffic will come to your website.

If your website’s user experience is not satisfactory, it could lead to a decline in your search engine rankings and difficulty in turning your site’s visitors into customers.

This isn’t only a desire of Google, but users also want it.

It has been found that the majority of users, 88%, are not likely to revisit a website if they had a negative experience on it the first time. Trust is hard to earn and quickly lost.

If you create a fantastic experience for customers, they will choose you over other websites that do not offer a good service.

2. Keyword research.

Keyword research is the foundation of search engine optimisation.

Search engine optimisation relies heavily on keywords. The basis of your website’s content are the concepts, ideas, and subjects it covers.

At one point in time, optimizing a website for search engine visibility involved locating relevant keywords and then including them in the page content.

But Google is now smarter than that. It now has the capability to comprehend language details such as the root of a word, equivalents, and responses.

That implies your optimization for search engines using ethical methods needs to be more intelligent as well.

Here’s how:

First, use keyword research to inform great content .

Your research into what words people are using in their searches provides insight into what they are searching for. Pick the topics and primary elements of how-to articles, videos, and long-form material using this.

Then, make sure your keyword is included in key elements of the web page:

  • Article headline, page title and meta tags.
  • URL slug – this is what shows up in search results and attracts users.
  • First paragraph of the article – this engages readers and tells them straight up that your article will focus on their search term.
  • Article subheadings – Keep the readers’ attention as they’re scrolling with subheadings that give clarity and, where appropriate, use short and long-tail keywords.

3. Create content that’s unique and valuable.

Engaging in any form of stealing content or creating poor quality, spammy material is the absolute worst thing to do in terms of black hat SEO.

You might not know whether you’re breaking the rules, so let’s lay this out really clearly:

  • DON’T republish existing posts without attribution.
  • DON’T rewrite content that already exists.

Taking someone else’s work without their permission is not only immoral, but Google also frowns upon content that is the same as something already published.

Why? Plagiarizing does not assist individuals who want something original, demanding, and reliable.

In most instances, taking another person’s material will not help increase your rankings.

Google’s Panda update was created with the purpose of focusing on this.

It is more advantageous to generate radically distinctive and practical content as part of a thorough content advertising plan.

When you pay for content, make sure you’re not paying a low price for material that has been filled up with keywords.

Your users will not thank you for it.

Remember, Google rewards websites with good “engagement signals”.

Google pays a lot of attention to the amount of time people stay on your page when evaluating engagement signals.

If Google detects that visitors to your website are quickly exiting, your position on the search engine rankings will decrease.

The amount of keywords contained in your content is not significant.

The answer?

Put your money into devising a plan that concentrates on forming captivating content that will be sure to attract visitors and keep them interested.

If you lack the resources necessary to complete the task, it would be wise to hire some knowledgeable content writers to aid you.

Be sure to incorporate long-form content into your plan.

Let’s have a deeper conversation regarding handy material – how critical is it actually?

Google has an AI-based system called Google RankBrain which enables it to gauge whether users are content with a particular group of search outcomes.

If you provide users with the information they are looking for, Google will place your website near the top of the results list.

Creating original, helpful content is absolutely critical for successful white hat SEO and skipping out is not an option.

4. Link building.

We’ve previously discussed the necessity of constructing links for search engine optimization.

The most important thing Google takes into consideration when making decisions is the power of your link building plan.

Link building is more important than creating new content.

Investigate the leading ranking results for your keyword and you can be sure they possess an impressive amount of excellent backlinks.

That’s how Google works.

Constructing connections is not a swift or uncomplicated job. It takes TIME.

So what’s the alternative? Buying links.

It is possible to acquire a group of superior links from websites that will raise your site’s visibility quickly and straightforwardly by buying links.

BUT if you are caught out using this shady technique, the penalties can be serious.

Here’s what Google say s:

Engaging in the activity of acquiring or selling links that pass PageRank can reduce the excellence of search results. Taking part in link plans breaches Google’s Webmaster Regulations and can adversely affect a website’s ranking in search engine outcomes.

You got it – buying links VIOLATES Google’s guidelines.

Creating connections might be difficult, but it is necessary. Focus on:

A. Quality.

First, think quality over quantity.

Google searches for hints that demonstrate that your backlinks have been legitimately acquired.

Place an emphasis on gaining backlinks to highly regarded websites that people have faith in and esteem.

Getting a link from a highly-credible source like Forbes is significantly more beneficial than getting links from numerous sites with little to no authority.

B. Relevancy.

Aim for backlinks that are related to your site. It makes sense to work with Bunnings if you are offering BBQs as a product.

C. Natural growth.

How many backlinks are you getting over time? If Google notices a sudden surge of backlinks and then a prompt halt, it is assumed that the backlinks were bought.

How do you get white hat backlinks? Follow these proven white hat SEO methods:

A. Do round-up posts

Ask professionals in your field to participate in round-up posts about a specific subject.

Create an incredible blog article that features their name as well as a link to their social media page. Then, send them a connection to the article and request that they pass it on to their online media accounts and website.

This should result in more people sharing your post, which will attract attention from highly authoritative sources.

B. Broken link-building

Look for hyperlinks that don’t work on other websites that are well-respected, then offer to give them a link as a substitute.

You can use Check My Links and Ahrefs Site Explorer to verify if any links are not working.

Individuals ought to be pleased to provide a link to you due to the benefit you are giving to their website.

C. Become a source for reporters and bloggers

Use a match-making site like SourceBottle or Haro . These services offer a platform for bloggers and journalists to connect with specialists and companies that want to increase their visibility on news websites and blogs.

This technique for SEO that utilizes ethical practices requires time and effort, yet it’s the most effective way to generate substantial amounts of respectable backlinks.

5. On-page SEO

The last technique related to white hat SEO that you need to be aware of is optimization of content on webpages. Okay, technically this is more than one strategy. This phrase is referring to the changes needed to be made to each page in order to increase its ranking in search engine results.

The most remarkable aspect is that taking small steps which are easy to maintain can result in significant alterations.

We have determined five essential components to concentrate on as the beginning stage.

A. Create descriptive URLs.

Google uses your page’s URL to understand what your content is about:

So, make your URLs both short and keyword-rich.

This way, Google is aware of precisely what the webpage is referring to and how to organize it.

B. Use keywords strategically

We have already discussed the significance of keywords to your ethical SEO.

Do you recall the days when you could improve the ranking of your page by cramming it with keywords?

Stuffing in as many keywords as you possibly can into your content, even when it doesn’t make sense?

That is an unethical method of conducting business, and unfortunately, it is still practiced by many people.

Search engines have evolved, and stuffing key words into text is no longer effective.

Instead, you need to use your target keyword and variations in strategic places that will show Google what the page is about:

  • In your title tag
  • In H1 or H2 tag
  • At the start of your content (intro)

C. Optimise images.

We know, search engines can’t see your images. So how can you optimise them?

Use alt tags.

Search engines utilize alt tags in order to discover the contents of an image so they can be properly recorded.

The greater the detail included in your Alt tags, the more comprehension Google will have.

D. Use descriptive, keyword-rich meta tags.

Adhere to the optimal strategies when forming meta descriptions for every page on your website to facilitate both visitors and search engines to uncover your content.

Time to Update the Hat

I don’t practice black hat SEO. However, I have extensive experience in SEO, having worked in the field for almost two decades, and I know of several individuals who publicly claim to be ‘white hats’ yet privately indulge in ‘black hat’ tactics. Many of the top professionals in SEO who presently work for large companies had a background in utilizing malicious strategies, often referred to as black hat tactics.

The practice of marketing by assigning blame is inconsistent with moral values. The black hat/white hat dichotomy is false.

White hat Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is an approach intended for marketing purposes. A more precise definition of SEO is one which follows Google’s regulations.

Google and publishers will always have a confrontational relationship. The best SEOs understand this.

Perhaps it’s time to overtly admit the strife between SEO specialists and Google (whatever roles are played) and completely end the distinction between ‘white hat’ and ‘black hat’ SEO.
